Opioid Prevention

The BCPHD’s opioid prevention program aims to reduce opioid misuse, prevent addiction, and minimize the social and health consequences of opioid abuse. It targets various groups, including individuals at risk, healthcare providers, and community organizations. Opioid prevention programming is a multifaceted effort requiring collaboration across sectors to address the epidemic's root causes. With continued education, resources, and community support, these programs can save lives and build healthier communities.

The Bastrop County Public Health Department (BCPHD) plays a critical role in addressing the opioid crisis using a combination of strategies tailored to their community’s needs, such as:
  1. Promoting Education and Awareness: Conducting public education campaigns to increase awareness about the dangers of opioid misuse, recognizing addiction, and understanding treatment options. These campaigns target various age groups and focus on prevention.
  2. Implementing Harm Reduction Strategies: Programs such as naloxone distribution, and supervised consumption sites can reduce the risks associated with opioid use while preventing overdoses.
  3. Monitoring and Surveillance: Tracking opioid-related data, helping identify trends and hotspots, and guiding targeted interventions.
  4. Collaborating with and Engaging in Community Partnerships: Partnering with schools, businesses, faith organizations, first responders, medical providers and law enforcement to create a united front against the opioid crisis.
